As two of TV Club’s officers, Aileen and Antonio are responsible for recruiting new members and alerting existing members about club updates. Last year they created their own TV Club social media page. It’s used to attract new members and allows everyone in the club to post pictures and comments about their favorite shows. This year, the club is focusing on Finding Alyssa, a show playing exclusively on a streaming platform called Streaming Plus.
Aileen and Antonio get together in the computer lab at the community center to plan their social media posts for the club this year. Antonio logs onto the internet and conducts a search for the show.
Search
Searching on the web or in an app seems simple, but there’s a complex process beneath the surface.
Personal Information
If you have an account, the service already has information about you, such as your gender an age, which are powerful ways to customize the results you see and to target marketing messages. But there’s lots of other data that can be used as well.
Search History
Your past searches can influence your current search results. A service can store all your past searches, along with their results. By knowing what you’ve been searching for recently, a service can predict the context of your current search, and show you ads that might be relevant.
Targeted Search Results
Your search results are personalized based on the information the service that powers the site or app has about you already—and the ads that appear alongside or among the search result are also targeted.
They choose a few pictures and a trailer to share on their personal social media pages, but also tag TV Club’s social media site and include this post.
Other members see the post and comment on it. By posting photos and sharing the trailer, Aileen and Antonio hope to attract a lot of new members this year.
